COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework
Question: Examine about the COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework. Answer: Presentation: World Com is a goliath telecom organization that came into spotlight for the bookkeeping outrage in its books of records. The misrepresentation was submitted in the books of record in the two different ways by diminishing the save account and under detailing of costs. The working edge demonstrates the productivity of the organization. The working edge of the organization has diminished pointedly during 1998. So as to improve the working edge the organization utilized manipulative bookkeeping strategy with the goal that organization can extend improved income (Knechel Salterio, 2016). The organization passed invented bookkeeping passages to expand the income sum and it was passed from the Corporate Unallocated Revenue account. The organization diminished the save for covering the liabilities of the organization procured. The organization from its save added $2.8 billion to its income. This brought about increment in overall revenue of the organization continually during the year 1999 and 2000. The present bookkeeping control is viewed as lacking to keep up a similar degree of income by 2001. In 2001, the net revenue of the organization has diminished to half when contrasted with the earlier years (Martin et al., 2014). The second manner by which the World Com has performed misrepresentation is by under revealing of costs. The organization has under detailed the line cost with the goal that stock cost of the organization is expanded. The line cost of the organization incorporates costs for entomb association with other media transmission organizations. The organization in the year 2000 really endured lost $649 million (Kiesow et al., 2015). Be that as it may, by performing extortion the organization announced the benefit of $2608 million around the same time. The organization detailed the costs as capital venture and it was appeared in monetary record. The organization made this misrepresentation to show that the organization is procuring more by making less costs. The organization moved into the capital record the present costs. The organization by downplaying the costs helped the overall gain of the organization and as the costs was promoted so the benefits of the organization has expanded from 19 99 to 2001. In this manner, it tends to be said that the organization has maintained a strategic distance from lost billion dollars by underwriting the line cost as opposed to communicating it as costs. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) gives the activity to discloser of money related data. The SOX Act energizes more prominent activity for the budgetary data revelation. Thirdly, the administration made bogus archives so the bogus passages in the books of the records are hidden. The across the board misrepresentation was pervasive in the organization of the Health South and even the examiners permitted the extortion to be proceeded (Luo, 2015). The segment 303 of the SOX Act manages the ill-advised impacts on the direct of review. The segment 303 gives that it will be unlawful to impact the exhibition of a reviewer occupied with giving free assessment on the fiscal summary. For this situation, the administration of the organization has abused the arrangement of the demonstration by affecting the assessment of the reviewer. The SOX Act gives that change of archive is a criminal offense that pulls in punishments under segment 802 of the SOX Act. The segment 108 of the SOX Act requires the organization to set up the fiscal summary as per the bookkeeping measures. For this situation, the organization has occupied with misrepresentation so the area 108 of the demonstration is abused. In this inquiry the three article is talked about to look at the change that have occurred in the job of review panel and inside review after the death of SOX Act. The main article by Cynthia et al., 2011 in Highlights of Corporate Governance Research. Diary of Accountancy expresses that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 spurs ongoing corporate administration activities (SOX). The article shows that huge change have occurred in the wake of going of the SOX Act (Karanja Zaveri, 2014). In the article of Corporate Governance in the Post-Sarbanes-Oxley by Cohen et al., 2010 states that duty of the board, examiner and corporate administration has fundamentally extended after the Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002. This examination explores the job of the inner review work in the revelation of the material shortcoming. The information of 214 firms were utilized to contemplate the connection between the divulgence of material shortcoming and the properties and exercises of inner review capacities. The consequence of the investigation showed that the revelation of material shortcoming is adversely related with the degree of training of the IAF. It is additionally found in the examination that the act of the reviewing of the review commitment and the divulgence of material shortcoming have a positive relationship. The coordination of the inner and outer examiner proposes that these exercises builds the viability of the consistence procedure of area 404. Reference Karanja, E., Zaveri, J. (2014). As you complete your profile and add more content to it, your profile strength increases. At the bottom rung is the Beginner Status, which is given to users with less than 50% profile completion. To be ranked as a beginner, you only need to set up your profile and fill in basic information such as your name, your location, one job and three skills. The next level is Intermediate, which is given to users who have reached 50% profile completion. The Intermediate level is followed by Advanced level, which is reserved for users who have reached more than 75% profile completion. This is followed by Expert level, which is given to users who have reached 90% profile completion. At the top of the ladder is the All Star level, which is reserved for users who have 100% profile completion. If you want to increase your chances of success on LinkedIn, the All-Star status is what you should be aiming for. LinkedIn algorithms are designed to give priority to users with complete profiles by ranking them higher in search results compared to users with incomplete profiles. With a complete profile, you are more likely to be found and contacted. Actually, users with an All-Star status are 40 times more likely to get contacted through LinkedIn compared to users who are yet to attain that status. To achieve All-Star status on LinkedIn, there are eight key components that you need to fill in on your profile. Below, we take a look at how to fill in these eight key components in order to score the All-Star status.THE EIGHT KEY COMPONENTS OF ALL-STAR STATUSProfile PhotoIf you do not have a profile photo on your LinkedIn profile, you are making a very huge mistake. Your profile photo is one on the most important elements on your profile. It is your first chance to make an impression on other LinkedIn users and communicate to them that you are likable, trustworthy and friendly. The impression you make with your profile photo matters a lot.A study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science shows that the first impression a person forms about you from a photo is likely to stick even after meeting you in person.Having a profile photo also increases your chances of having your profile viewed. LinkedIn statistics show that profiles with a professional profile photo are 14 times more likely to be viewed, compared to those without a photo. In addition, having a profile photo makes it easier for people to recognize you, especially if there are several other people with a name similar to yours. One thing you need to understand here is that simply having a profile photo is not enough. To increase your chances of getting viewed, your profile photo needs to look professional. Donât include your spouse, kids, or pets in your LinkedIn profile photo. You should be the only one in the photo, and the background should be clear. Your dressing in the photo should be formal. If you canât wear it to your workplace, it has no place in your LinkedIn profile photo. Oh, and remember to smile. It makes you look confident, friendly and inviting.Headline Your headline is what appears just below your name. The aim of the headline is to let other people know who you are professionally. When you sign up for your LinkedIn account, LinkedInâs default suggestion is that you should enter your job title and the name of the company you work for.Sure, that works, but if you want to stand out from the other 562 registered LinkedIn users, you need to be more creative. While the headline is limited to 120 characters, this is more than enough to write an attention grabbing headline. So, how do you write a great headline?Instead of listing your job title and company, use your headline to show your passion and the value you bring to the table. What do clients or companies stand to gain by hiring or working with you? What unique skills do you have?Remember to include industry related keywords (not overused buzzwords) to make easier for r ecruiters and clients to find you. Below are some examples of what you can write on your headline instead of your title and company:Rockstar Content Strategist, Top Performer, Seeking Nonprofit OpportunitiesFinancial Analyst Specializing In Startup IT CompaniesElite Blockchain Programmer With A Passion For Coding And Mastery In Solidity. Java And Python CertifiedThe above headlines are clearly more eye catching than content strategist at ABC or programmer at XYZ.Summary The summary sections gives you a chance to expound on your headline. This is where you introduce yourself and share your personal story directly with your audience. Many people find writing a summary about themselves to be a difficult task, but it need not be. Imagine yourself in an evening cocktail party for people within your industry.Drinks are flowing, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. You strike a conversation with a charming lady or gentleman, and after a bit of chit chat, they say, âSo, tell me about yours elf.â You should write your summary the same way you would answer that question in a relaxed professional setting. When writing your summary, you should talk about things such as what you love about your job, your strengths and specialties, some of the successes you have had in your career, things about your industry that give you satisfaction, and so on.You have 2000 characters to play with here, which is more than enough to show other users why you are someone worthy reaching out to. Below is an example of a great LinkedIn summary.âI am a seasoned content writer with over 7 yearsâ experience in the tech industry. Iâm passionate about helping websites increase their traffic and conversions. I have spent the last 3 years with company XYZ, during which I have grown their website traffic from one million visitors a month to 12 million visitors a month and increased their online sales by 62%. I have been featured on Mashable and Wired. Iâm currently offering my services as a w eb consultant. If youâd like us to work together, get in touch through name@mycompany.com.âSkillsLinkedIn is a platform for making professional connections, so it is important to highlight whatever skills you bring to the table. LinkedIn allows you to list up to 50 skills in this section. You donât have to fill up all the 50 skills though. In order to score the All-Star status, you only need to list a minimum of 5 skills.Wondering why you should bother adding skills to your profile? Well, according to LinkedIn, users with at least 5 skills on their profile are viewed 13 more times on average compared to users who do not have their skills listed on their profiles. While you can list up to 50 skills on your profile, donât get carried away. You want to make sure that you are sharing the right skills. A good way of identifying relevant skills to list on your profile is to look at the profiles of your colleagues and people you admire within your field. What skills have they listed on their profiles? Take the ones that apply to you and add them to your profile. Donât limit your list to technical skills only. Many recruiters prioritize job seekers with transferrable soft skills as well, so be sure to highlight one or two soft skills on your profile, such as leadership, communication, collaboration, time management, and so on. Finally, keep in mind that LinkedIn allows you to edit the order in which your skills are shown on your profile. Edit yours and make sure the most important skills are shown first.ExperienceThis section allows you to tell a story of where you have been as a professional. Since you are aiming for the All-Star status, you need to list your current position and two past positions. You wonât be able to score All-Star status without listing two past positions. Need more reason as to why you need to list your previous positions?LinkedIn says that profiles with more than one job listed are 12 times more likely to be viewed than those with jus t the current position. One mistake that many LinkedIn users make when filling out their experience section is to simply mention where they worked and the position they held there. If you want to show your worth to recruiters and prospective employers, you need to do more than that.Share more details about your previous positions. What interesting projects did you work on during your time there? What were your key achievements and accomplishments? What did you deliver? What did you learn? What special credentials did you earn?Use figures to quantify your achievements in each position. If you have any pictures, videos, presentations, press releases or links to support your work experience, donât be shy to use them.Industry And LocationThe aim of this section is to let other users know what industry you work in and where you are located. Many people do not see the importance of this section and therefore tend to leave it blank. However, you cannot score the All-Star status without fill ing in this section. In addition to the All-Star status, adding your industry and location makes it easier for you to be found. LinkedIn allows users to filter their search results based on industry and location.Adding your industry and location allows users searching for people within your industry or location to find you.EducationTo score the All-Star status, you also need to add your education. Adding your education has a number of benefits beyond propelling you towards All-Star status.First, by listing your highest qualification, you are proving your academic level. Letâs say that you got a Bachelorâs Degree in Engineering, but later decided to pursue a career as a freelance writer or a social media manager. In such an instance, it might seem that your bachelorâs degree has no correlation to your current profession, and it might be tempting to leave it out. However, listing it in your education section shows prospective clients and employers that they are dealing with someon e whose thinking is at university level.Listing your education also makes it easier to build your network by providing you with an opportunity to connect to other users who went to the same school as you. When listing your education, donât stop at the school you attended and the certification you earned. Use this as another chance to show your worth by talking about any other skills or knowledge you gained during your school days. Were you the president of the studentâs union? This is a chance to showcase your leadership skills. Were you a member of the computer club? This is a chance for you to showcase your passion for your industry. Talking about your experiences at school also provides you with a chance to tuck in some extra keywords into your profile, thus making it easier for recruiters, employers and clients to find you.ConnectionsIn order to score All-star status, you also need to have 50 or more LinkedIn connections. Finding people to connect with should not be a difficul t task. There are several ways of finding people you may know on LinkedIn. The first option is to important contacts from your email address. This will bring up a list of LinkedIn users whose contacts you have in your address book. You can then go through the list and send invitations to those you want to add as connections. You can also use the âAlumniâ tab, which will bring up a list of people who went to the same school as you. If you find people you actually know, you can then go ahead and add them to your network.BONUS TIPS TO MAKE YOUR PROFILE ALL-STAR PLUSBy filling in these eight key components, you will be able to score the All-Star status and get ahead of nearly half of the competition, since only 51% of LinkedIn users have a complete profile. Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 740 Downloads: 10 Date added: 2019/05/08 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: The Yellow Wallpaper Essay Did you like this example? Yellow wallpaper Yellow Wallpaper is a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who is facing a dark world where a woman falls into severe after birth depression. Charlotte deals with societys expectations of women and evokes the notion of finding her identity. Perkins provides an explanation of the traditional gender female role and womens struggle to escape. So, the main character creates his own life. In the 18th and 19th centuries, women were considered inferior to men. They are locked in a marriage, and their main role was to have children and take care of their homestay. Therefore, the story uses symbols, themes, identity and aesthetics to explore figurative languages that capture the readers attention. One of the main themes of Yellow Wallpaper is writing. Nator sadly explains, She will not speak to a living soul, and Jenny is even banned from how Jenny works, and her husband does not allow her to write. Therefore, she uses writing as a way to work through her thoughts and perceptions. The main character said, I have to say my feelings and thoughts in some way. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Short Story Written By Charlotte Perkins" essay for you Create order It is a real relief, recounts this concept. The speaker strongly contradicts the notion of homemaker when women cannot work until they are healthy again. She says, I dont agree with these ideas. Yellow wallpaper is another important symbol throughout the story. The picture of the wallpaper shows the expectations and restraints of women in different societies. The commentators understand the wallpaper, saying, Not only is it crazy but ultimately it is liberated. The speaker attests to her readers that she is bound to the expectations of society. This narration is a real identity because the speaker is not defined as a female stereotype. Similarly, a narrator is usually recognized as a child described by John when he calls her Bedd Little goose and Children Girl. Finally, she represents an able woman who deviates from social norms and duties. Its obvious when she says, I have to write in any way and say what I think. She expresses her identity as a free woman who is confined to herself. The speaker can also describe him and his perception differently against her husband. She changes from John declaring I love you terribly to showing that her husband is very kind and lovely. The narrator keeps declaring that she can see through him. This change in narrative conveys a change in the narrator as one of empowerment in the plight of obedience and restraint. This work explores self-realization by the speaker. Furthermore, alongside of female stereotypes is another major concept that was developed by Perkins. Womens emphasis reflects the expectations of womens role in the 19th century. One such role is described only once by Mary, who is elaborately described as going well with the baby. She has a good expression of her motherhood. Jenny is also expressing her expectations for female roles as a perfect housekeeper who wishes there would be no better job. Mary and Jenny are typical women who willingly accept defined roles in society. In most cases, most women do not agree with these social norms but are imprisoned by them. This social norm is evident in the narrator. Aesthetics is one of the characteristics that appears in Yellow Wallpaper. The wallpaper explores all the invisible emotions and perspectives expressed in the story. Narrator describes the wallpaper as eye confusion, constantly stimulating and stimulating research, and when you follow uncertain curves at some distance, they suddenly kill themselves. Narrator says she cant understand the wallpaper as if she cant deduce her expectations from society. She also says: There is a recurring place where broken necks and two nearsighted eyes stare back at you, the story shows how women are trapped and destroyed by male-dominated social assumptions. Finally, Yellow Wallpaper is an interesting short novel in which the narrator explores the difficulties of women in the 19th century. In this book, women are subordinate and inferior to men, leaving the speaker free of these social norms. The story highlights a modern society in which women are imprisoned for their role in social norms and power. The speaker and the writer are upset by these social expectations, and therefore research women to make them more creative and productive. Women should play a vital role in social development as well as housewives. Equality is one characteristic that a narrator tries to show both men and women.

The Pentagon s Decision Argument Against Female Members...
With the Pentagonââ¬â¢s recent decision to open up combat positions to female members of the armed forces, intense debate has occurred over this issue. Those who disagree with the Pentagonââ¬â¢s decision argue that women cannot perform as well as men in combat situations. Supporters counter by suggesting that opening all combat positions to women will enhance and strengthen the US military. Army Captain William Denn, in his editorial ââ¬Å"Women in Combat Roles Would Strengthen the Military,â⬠argues in favor of women in combat. However, to support his position, Denn utilizes the fallacy of composition, brushes aside the evidence of womenââ¬â¢s inferiority in combat, and develops his position with flawed examples. In the opening paragraphs of his article,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to Mike Fredenburg of National Review, another study shows that ââ¬Å"the vast majority of women do not possess the lean mass necessary to meet the strength requirements for ve ry heavy and heavy physical MOSââ¬â¢s.â⬠Thus, Dennââ¬â¢s argument, based on the fallacy of composition, does not hold up in light of scientific research. While acknowledging the existence of studies showing the inferiority of womenââ¬â¢s performance in combat conditions compared to menââ¬â¢s, Denn holds an almost dismissive attitude toward such evidence. He instead argues: ââ¬Å"The success of womenââ¬â¢s integration into combat units will depend on how quickly and enthusiastically officers and enlisted soldiers embrace it. Many servicemen resist the idea, citing studies that suggest the inclusion of women in combat would imperil unit effectiveness, good order, and discipline.â⬠Thus, Denn suggests that the barriers to womenââ¬â¢s success in combat lie not with the womenââ¬â¢s physical capabilities but rather with those who oppose the idea of servicewomen in combat. However, a Marine Corps study conducted over a period of one year refutes Dennââ¬â ¢s claims. ââ¬Å"The Marines created a battalion of 100 female and 300 male volunteers. During the past year, they trainedâ⬠¦taking part in realistic combat exercises. All-male squads, the study
The Indigo Spell Chapter Twenty-Four Free Essays
I FELT PRETTY BAD about burning down my teacherââ¬â¢s house. Ms. Terwilliger, for obvious reasons, seemed to think that was the least of her problems. We will write a custom essay sample on The Indigo Spell Chapter Twenty-Four or any similar topic only for you Order Now She wasnââ¬â¢t sure if her insurance would cover the damage, but her company was pretty speedy in sending someone out to investigate the cause. We were still waiting to hear their verdict on coverage, but one thing they didnââ¬â¢t report finding was any sign of human remains. Part of me was relieved that I hadnââ¬â¢t actually killed anyone. Another part of me feared we hadnââ¬â¢t seen the last of Alicia. What silly comparison had Adrian made? The Moriarty to your Holmes. I had to imagine that being hit in the face with razor blades and then left in a burning building would make anyone hold a grudge. A little investigation eventually turned up Veronica at a Los Angeles hospital, checked in as Jane Doe. Visiting her comatose sister became the greatest of Ms. Terwilligerââ¬â¢s priorities, and she harbored hopes of possibly finding a way to undo the spell. Despite how busy she now was, my teacher still managed to urge me to meet her coven, and I agreed for a few different reasons. One was that it was kind of impossible for me to act like I didnââ¬â¢t want to wield magic anymore. The other reason was that I didnââ¬â¢t plan on being around. I was still resolved to go with Marcus to Mexico, and the week flew by. Winter finals were a breeze, and before I knew it, it was Friday, the day before our trip to Mexico. I took a risk by telling my friends goodbye. The safest thing wouldââ¬â¢ve been to disappear without a trace, but I trusted them all ââ¬â even Angeline ââ¬â to keep my secret and feign ignorance once the Alchemists discovered they had a runaway. I told Trey as well. No matter what had gone down between us, he was still my friend, and I would miss him. As the day wore on, the dorm grew quieter and quieter ââ¬â aside from unending Christmas music playing in the lobby. Not wanting to exclude other religions, Mrs. Weathers had also set out a menorah and ââ¬Å"Happy Kwanzaaâ⬠banner. Tomorrow was officially the last day before everyone had to be out, and a number of people had already left for winter break. Iââ¬â¢d finished my own packing, which was light. I didnââ¬â¢t want to be burdened down with excess luggage since I really had no idea what to expect in Mexico. I still had two people I needed to say goodbye to: Adrian and Jill. Iââ¬â¢d avoided them both for very different reasons, but time was running out. I knew Jill was just a flight of stairs away, but Adrian was more difficult. Weââ¬â¢d been in touch a couple times after the fire, simply to sort out some details, but heââ¬â¢d soon gone silent. No calls, no texts, no dreams. Maybe I shouldââ¬â¢ve been glad. Maybe I shouldââ¬â¢ve welcomed the chance to leave without any painful goodbyes . . . but I couldnââ¬â¢t. My chest ached with the thought of not seeing him again. Even though he was the reason I was leaving, I still felt like I needed some closure. Itââ¬â¢s not about closure, Sydney. You want to see him. You need to see him. And thatââ¬â¢s exactly why you have to leave. Finally, I took the plunge and called him. It took me so long to work up the nerve that I could hardly believe it when he didnââ¬â¢t answer. I resisted the urge to immediately try again. No. I could wait. There would still be time tomorrow, and surely . . . surely he wasnââ¬â¢t avoiding me? I decided to hold off on talking to Jill until the next day. Telling her goodbye was just as difficult ââ¬â and not just because of what she saw through the bond. I knew sheââ¬â¢d think I was abandoning her. In truth, if I stayed and ended up with Adrian, Iââ¬â¢d possibly be caught and never be able to help her at all. At least if I was away and free, I could try to help her from the outside. I hoped sheââ¬â¢d understand. Waiting on her gave me the opportunity to take care of an unwelcome errand: returning Malachi Wolfeââ¬â¢s gun. Iââ¬â¢d never gone to his home without Adrian, and even though I knew I had nothing to fear from Wolfe, there was still something a little unsettling about going to the compound alone. To my complete and utter astonishment, Wolfe let me into the house when I arrived. All was quiet. ââ¬Å"Where are the dogs?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"At training,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I have a friend whoââ¬â¢s an expert dog trainer, and heââ¬â¢s giving them some stealth lessons. He used to work for a local K-9 unit.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t think it was in the Chihuahua genetic code to ever be stealthy. I kept that to myself and instead stared around in amazement at Wolfeââ¬â¢s kitchen. Iââ¬â¢d expected something like a shipââ¬â¢s galley. Instead, I found an astonishingly cheery room, with blue-checkered wallpaper and a squirrel cookie jar. If someone had asked me to describe the most unlikely Wolfe kitchen out there, it wouldââ¬â¢ve looked something like this. No ââ¬â wait. On the refrigerator, he had some magnets that looked like ninja throwing stars. That, at least, was in character. Adrianââ¬â¢s going to flip out when I tell him. Then I remembered I might not see Adrian for a very long time. That realization killed whatever amusement Iââ¬â¢d just felt. ââ¬Å"So what do you need?â⬠asked Wolfe. Peering at him, I suddenly had a strange feeling the eye patch really was on a different eye from last time. I shouldââ¬â¢ve paid more attention. ââ¬Å"Another gun?â⬠I returned to the task at hand. ââ¬Å"No, sir. I didnââ¬â¢t even need the first one, but thanks for lending it to me.â⬠I removed it from the bag and handed it to him. He gave the gun a once-over and then set it inside a drawer. ââ¬Å"Fixed your problem? You can still hang on to it if you want.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m leaving the country. Bringing it over the border might cause me some trouble.â⬠ââ¬Å"Fair enough,â⬠he said. He grabbed the cookie jar and took off the lid, leaning it toward me. An amazing scent drifted out. ââ¬Å"Want one? I just made them.â⬠I was really regretting not being able to tell Adrian about this. ââ¬Å"No thanks, sir. Iââ¬â¢ve had more than enough sugar these last few weeks.â⬠I felt like I should have a frequent customer card for Pies and Stuff. ââ¬Å"I thought you looked better. Not all skin and bones anymore.â⬠He nodded in approval, which felt really weird and slightly creepy. ââ¬Å"So where are you two kids going?â⬠ââ¬Å"Mexi ââ¬â oh, Adrianââ¬â¢s not going with me. Iââ¬â¢m going with someone else.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠He slid the squirrel back across the counter. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m surprised. I always figured when you two left here, you went home and had your own private ââ¬Ëtraining sessions.'â⬠I felt myself turning bright red. ââ¬Å"No! Itââ¬â¢s not like ââ¬â I mean, weââ¬â¢re just friends, sir.â⬠ââ¬Å"I had a friend like that once. Silver Tooth Sally.â⬠He got that faraway expression that always came on when he had an anecdote to share. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, did you say ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Never met a woman like Sally,â⬠he interrupted. ââ¬Å"We fought our way across Switzerland together, always watching each otherââ¬â¢s backs. We finally got out alive ââ¬â just barely ââ¬â and she wanted to come back to the States and settle down. Not me. I had dreams, you see. I was a young man then, drawn to danger and glory. I left her and went off to live with an Orcadian shaman. It took two years and a lot of vision quests to realize my mistake, but when I got back, I couldnââ¬â¢t find her. When I close my eye at night, I can still see that tooth sparkle like a star. It haunts me, girl. It haunts me.â⬠I frowned. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think the Orcadians have vision quests, sir. Or shamans.â⬠Wolfe leaned forward and shook a finger at me, his eye wide. ââ¬Å"Learn from my mistakes, girl. Donââ¬â¢t go to the Orkneys. You donââ¬â¢t need some mystical vision to see whatââ¬â¢s in front of you, you hear me?â⬠I gulped. ââ¬Å"Yes, sir.â⬠I hurried out after that, thinking that being in a different country from Malachi Wolfe might be a good thing. The next morning, I prepared to tell Jill goodbye, but she beat me to it and showed up at my door. It was the first time weââ¬â¢d truly spoken since the morning after that last dream with Adrian. She walked into my room and frowned when she saw the suitcase. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re really going?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. And Iââ¬â¢m sure you know why.â⬠She crossed her arms and looked me straight in the eye, without any of the reservation sheââ¬â¢d shown last time. I had trouble holding that stare. ââ¬Å"Sydney, donââ¬â¢t leave Adrian because of me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s more complicated than that,â⬠I said automatically. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s really not,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"From everything Iââ¬â¢ve seen and heard, youââ¬â¢re just afraid. Youââ¬â¢ve always controlled every detail of your life. When you couldnââ¬â¢t ââ¬â like with the Alchemists ââ¬â you found a way to seize back that control.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with wanting control,â⬠I snapped. ââ¬Å"Except that we canââ¬â¢t always have it, and sometimes thatââ¬â¢s a good thing. A great thing, even,â⬠she added. ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s how it is with Adrian. No matter how hard you try, you arenââ¬â¢t going to be able to control your feelings for him. You canââ¬â¢t help loving him, and so youââ¬â¢re running away. Iââ¬â¢m just an excuse.â⬠Who was she to lecture me like this? ââ¬Å"You think Iââ¬â¢m lying about how awkward it is for you to see everything that happens between us? Every intimate detail is on display. I canââ¬â¢t do that. I canââ¬â¢t live like that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Adrianââ¬â¢s learned to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, heââ¬â¢s had to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly.â⬠Some of her fierceness mellowed. ââ¬Å"Sydney, he brought me back from the dead. Itââ¬â¢s the greatest thing anyone can or will do for me. I canââ¬â¢t pay him back, but I can let him live his life the way he wants to. I donââ¬â¢t expect him to shelter me because of the bond, and Iââ¬â¢m not going to judge him ââ¬â or you. Someday, he and I will learn to block each other.â⬠ââ¬Å"Someday,â⬠I reiterated. ââ¬Å"Yes. And until then, we do the best we can. All youââ¬â¢re doing by leaving is making three people miserable.â⬠ââ¬Å"Three?â⬠I frowned. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m helping you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you really think Iââ¬â¢m happy when heââ¬â¢s miserable? Do you think I like the darkness that crawls over him?â⬠When I said nothing, she pushed forward. ââ¬Å"Look, I donââ¬â¢t have the same physical reaction to you that he does, but when heââ¬â¢s with you, heââ¬â¢s so full of joy . . . it radiates through to me, and itââ¬â¢s one of the greatest experiences Iââ¬â¢ve ever had. Iââ¬â¢ve never been in love like you guys are.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not ââ¬â â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t say it, and she gave me a knowing look. I tried a different tactic. ââ¬Å"Staying here is dangerous, especially with him. The Alchemists might find out about everything ââ¬â him, my tattoo, Ms. Terwilliger, and God knows what else.â⬠ââ¬Å"And if they donââ¬â¢t find out, look at what you get. Adrian. The rest of us. Magic. The chance to uncover their secrets. I know you love this life. Why would you give it up? Youââ¬â¢re too smart to get caught. Weââ¬â¢ll help you. Do you really think Marcus and his Merry Men can do that much fighting when theyââ¬â¢re always on the run?â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re like me. They understand me.â⬠She was obstinate. ââ¬Å"They arenââ¬â¢t like you at all. They talk. You act.â⬠It was so surprising to see her like this, so confident and so much wiser than her years. It was also a little irritating. If she was so wise, why couldnââ¬â¢t she understand how much was at stake? ââ¬Å"Jill, staying is a big risk ââ¬â in all ways.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course it is!â⬠she exclaimed, her eyes flashing with anger. ââ¬Å"Any life worth living is going to have risks. If you go to Mexico, youââ¬â¢ll regret it ââ¬â and I think you know that.â⬠My phone rang, cutting off my next response. It was Eddie. He rarely called, and panic seized me. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong?â⬠I demanded. He sounded mystified. ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t say anythingââ¬â¢s wrong . . . just surprising. Is Jill with you? You guys should really come down. Weââ¬â¢re outsideâ⬠He hung up, and I was left totally confused. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s up?â⬠asked Jill. ââ¬Å"Something surprising, apparently.â⬠She and I went down to the lobby, with no more mention of Adrian. When we stepped outside, we found Eddie and Angeline pointedly avoiding eye contact with each other. Standing near them was a tall, good-looking guy with neatly trimmed black hair and bright blue eyes. He wore a stern, serious expression and was scanning the area. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s a dhampir,â⬠Jill murmured to me. His eyes locked onto us at our approach, and that fierce look relaxed. ââ¬Å"Jill, Sydney,â⬠said Eddie. ââ¬Å"This is Neil Raymond. Heââ¬â¢s going to be joining us here.â⬠Neil swept Jill a bow so low, it was a wonder he didnââ¬â¢t hit the ground. ââ¬Å"Princess Jillian,â⬠he said in a deep voice. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s an honor to serve you, and Iââ¬â¢ll do so to the best of my abilities, even if it means sacrificing my own life.â⬠Jill took a step back, her eyes wide as she took him in. ââ¬Å"Th-thank you.â⬠Eddie looked back and forth between them, a small frown appearing on his face. ââ¬Å"Neilââ¬â¢s been sent as backup. I guess you filed some complaint about Jill not having enough protection?â⬠That was to me, and unless I was mistaken, there was an accusatory note in his voice. ââ¬Å"No ââ¬â I. Oh. I guess I kind of did.â⬠When Iââ¬â¢d been trying to do damage control with Stanton, one of my grievances had been that I never felt Jill was safe. I guess this was Stantonââ¬â¢s response. It was surprising, just as Eddie had said, but more eyes on her couldnââ¬â¢t hurt. From the way she was sizing Neil up, she certainly didnââ¬â¢t seem to mind either. I shook his hand. ââ¬Å"Nice to have you around, Neil. Are they passing you off as another cousin?â⬠ââ¬Å"Just a new student,â⬠he said. That was probably just as well. Our ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠was in danger of taking over Amberwood. I wouldââ¬â¢ve liked to learn a little more about him, but my time was up. Marcus was picking me up soon to go to the train station, seeing as Latte had been declared totaled. I guess that was a different sort of closure, albeit a sad kind. I told them all goodbye as I left to get my suitcase, acting as though I just had to run an errand. Eddie, Angeline, and Jill knew the truth, and I could see the hurt and regret in their eyes ââ¬â especially Jill. I prayed theyââ¬â¢d be okay without me. When I came back downstairs, I found Jill was the only one still there. ââ¬Å"I forgot to give you this,â⬠she said, handing over a small envelope. My name was on the outside, and I recognized the writing. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve been trying to get a hold of him and thought he might be avoiding me. This is his goodbye, huh?â⬠I felt disappointed that I wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to see Adrian in person one last time. Maybe a letter was better than nothing, but I wished I could have left with those beautiful eyes fresh in my mind. ââ¬Å"Is he . . . is he really upset?â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t stand the thought of him hurting. ââ¬Å"Read the letter,â⬠she said mysteriously. ââ¬Å"And remember, Sydney. This isnââ¬â¢t about me. This is about you guys. You can control everything else, but not this. Let go, and accept how you feel.â⬠We left on that note, and I went outside to sit on the curb and wait for Marcus. I stared at the envelope, looking at the way Adrian had written my name. Three times I nearly opened it . . . but chickened out each time. Finally, I saw Marcus drive in, and the envelope disappeared into my purse. As soon as he picked me up, he began talking excitedly about the big plans ahead. I barely heard. All I kept thinking about was Adrian and how empty my life was going to seem without him. Marcus and I were meeting Wade and Amelia at the train station, but I couldnââ¬â¢t picture any of them understanding me like Adrian ââ¬â even if they were human and shared the same background. None of them would have his dry wit or uncanny insight. And simmering beneath all those emotions were the more heated memories . . . the way weââ¬â¢d kissed, the way it had felt to be wrapped up in him. . . . ââ¬Å"Sydney? Are you even paying attention?â⬠I blinked and glanced over at Marcus. I think it was another of those moments where he couldnââ¬â¢t believe someone wasnââ¬â¢t hanging on to his every word. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"My mindââ¬â¢s somewhere else.â⬠He grinned. ââ¬Å"Well, shift it to beaches and margaritas because your lifeââ¬â¢s about to change.â⬠It was always beaches and margaritas with him. ââ¬Å"You left out the part about us sealing the tattoo. Unless your tattooist is also a bartender.â⬠ââ¬Å"There you go again, funny and beautiful.â⬠He laughed. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to have a great time.â⬠ââ¬Å"How long will we be down there?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, weââ¬â¢ll take care of the tattoos first. Thatââ¬â¢s the most important thing.â⬠I was relieved to see him taking that seriously. ââ¬Å"Then weââ¬â¢ll lie low, enjoy the sights for a few weeks. After that, weââ¬â¢ll come back and follow some leads on other dissatisfied Alchemists.â⬠ââ¬Å"And then youââ¬â¢ll repeat the process?â⬠I asked. In the rear-view mirror, I could see the Palm Springs skyline disappearing as we drove north. I felt a pang of longing in my chest. ââ¬Å"Get others to retrieve critical information and then free them?â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly.â⬠We drove in silence for another minute as I processed his words. ââ¬Å"Marcus, what do you do with that information you gather? I mean, what are you going to do about Master Jameson?â⬠ââ¬Å"Keep finding more evidence,â⬠he said promptly. ââ¬Å"This is the biggest lead weââ¬â¢ve ever had. Now we can really push forward in finding out more.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s more than a lead. Why not leak it to the Moroi?â⬠ââ¬Å"The Alchemists would deny it. Besides, we donââ¬â¢t want to be hasty.â⬠ââ¬Å"So what if they do deny it?â⬠I demanded. ââ¬Å"At least the Moroi will have a heads-up.â⬠He glanced over at me with a look that reminded me of a parent trying to be patient with a child. Ahead of us, I saw a sign for the train station. ââ¬Å"Sydney, I know youââ¬â¢re eager, but trust me. This is the way weââ¬â¢ve always done things.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know that itââ¬â¢s the right way, though.â⬠ââ¬Å"You have a lot of ideas for someone who just joined up.â⬠He chuckled. I wished heââ¬â¢d stop doing that. ââ¬Å"Just wait, and then youââ¬â¢ll understand.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t like his condescending attitude. ââ¬Å"I think I already understand. And you know what? I donââ¬â¢t think you guys do anything. I mean, youââ¬â¢ve uncovered some amazing information . . . but then what? You keep waiting. You run away and skulk around. How is this really helping? Your intentions are good . . . but thatââ¬â¢s all they are.â⬠I could almost hear Jillââ¬â¢s voice: They talk. You act. Ironically, Marcus was speechless. ââ¬Å"You could do so much,â⬠I continued. ââ¬Å"When I first found out about you, you seemed to hold all the potential in the world. Technically, you still do. But itââ¬â¢s being wasted.â⬠He pulled into the train stationââ¬â¢s parking lot, still looking utterly stunned. ââ¬Å"Where the hell is this coming from?â⬠he asked at last. ââ¬Å"Me,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Because Iââ¬â¢m not like you guys. I canââ¬â¢t do nothing. I canââ¬â¢t run away. And . . . I canââ¬â¢t go with you.â⬠It felt good to say that . . . and it also felt right. All week, my brain had been telling me the right thing to do was to walk away before things with Adrian and the Alchemists blew up. And yes, that probably was the smart thing. My heart had never entirely been on board, but Iââ¬â¢d tried to ignore it. It wasnââ¬â¢t until Iââ¬â¢d listened to both Jill and Marcus that I realized just this once, my brain might have to opt for the less logical solution. I had to give Marcus credit. He actually looked concerned and wasnââ¬â¢t just put out at not getting his way. ââ¬Å"Sydney I know how attached you are to this place and these people, but itââ¬â¢s not safe for you here. Itââ¬â¢s not safe for you anywhere, not as long as the Alchemists are watching. Not as long as your tattoo is vulnerable.â⬠ââ¬Å"Someone told me any life worth living has risks,â⬠I said, unable to hide a smile. I never thought Iââ¬â¢d be quoting Jill. Marcus slammed his fist against the dashboard. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s sentimental bullshit! It sounds good in theory, but the reality is completely different.â⬠ââ¬Å"What kind of reality could you have created if youââ¬â¢d stayed with the Alchemists?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"How much could you have uncovered?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing if I was caught,â⬠he said flatly. ââ¬Å"And no matter how useless you think we are, Iââ¬â¢ve freed dozens of Alchemists. Iââ¬â¢ve helped Clarence and other Moroi.â⬠ââ¬Å"You arenââ¬â¢t useless, Marcus. You do good work, but weââ¬â¢re just not on the same path, thatââ¬â¢s all. Iââ¬â¢m staying and doing things my way. Isnââ¬â¢t that what you said when we first met? Helping the Moroi on our own terms? These are mine.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re wasting your time!â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s my time to waste,â⬠I said. Adrian had said exactly the same thing to me on the flight to the wedding, when Iââ¬â¢d told him he couldnââ¬â¢t keep loving me. I felt bad for Marcus. I really did, especially since heââ¬â¢d truly been counting on me to come with him. He caught hold of my hand. ââ¬Å"Sydney, please donââ¬â¢t do this,â⬠he begged. ââ¬Å"No matter how confident you feel, no matter how careful you think you are, things will spiral out of control.â⬠ââ¬Å"They already have,â⬠I said, opening the passenger door. ââ¬Å"And Iââ¬â¢m going to stop fighting them. Thank you for everything, Marcus. I mean it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wait, Sydney,â⬠he called. ââ¬Å"Just tell me one thing.â⬠I glanced back and waited. ââ¬Å"Where did this come from? When you called me to tell me you were coming, you said youââ¬â¢d realized it was the smart thing to do. What made you change your mind?â⬠I gave him a smile that I hoped was as dazzling as one of his. ââ¬Å"I realized Iââ¬â¢m in love.â⬠Marcus, startled, looked around as though he expected to see my objet dââ¬â¢amour in the car with us. ââ¬Å"And you just realized that? Did you just have some sort of vision?â⬠ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t need to,â⬠I said, thinking of Wolfeââ¬â¢s ill-fated trip to the Orkneys. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s always been right in front of me.â⬠How to cite The Indigo Spell Chapter Twenty-Four, Essay examples

Sierra Haverfield Essays - Amish, Intentional Living,
Sierra Haverfield Final Project FCSA 351 274320025717500 Introduction The Amish culture is a very unique one that doesn't seem to get very much (positive) attention. In school we are always learning about foreign countries and their cultures but we never really examine the different cultures we have right here in the US. Granted, over the past couple years the Amish sectors in Pennsylvania have been in the news for child abuse, but we have never really taken a step back and looked at how differently they live from the rest of the country. I chose to write about the Amish people after sitting at the airport in Hawaii waiting for my luggage at baggage claim . Across the terminal there were a group of Amish women wearing long dresses with long sleeves and they look ed very thick in material. I was completely amazed that they weren't dying of heat stroke because it was at least 85 degrees in there. It was hard for me to believe that they came from the same country as me because they looked so foreign. When I read the prompt for this fin al essay, I knew I would have an easy time researching and writing about the Amish culture because I was already so interested in learning more about why they differ so much from the rest of America. History and Traditions The Amish religion was founded upon teachings of the early Christian church. A round 1693, a young Mennonite leader named Jacob Amman formed his own Christian fellowship. He did this because he felt that the Mennonite Church did not exercise enough church discipline or maintain a strong enough spiritual life. Because of this, Jacob Amman's 1828800-22860000 followers began to be nicknamed the Amish. Originally, dress for the Amish people did not have religious meaning. The first Amish people were mainly peasants so as time went on they just continued to dress in plain, unadorned clothing. However, interaction with the culture and lifestyle of the outside world eventually started to threaten the ide ntity of the Amish people . As a result of this, many believed that by stressing a lifestyle of nonconformity they would protect their culture and religious identity. The easiest way to do this was through th eir dress and appearance. 297180068770500 Different from most cultures, the Amish people believe that clothing is not meant to distinguish an individual from a group by making them more "attractive" over others. They feel that wearing clothing to emphasize one's attractiveness will create competition and sinful thoughts. Therefore, Amish women and girls wear dresses with full skirts and they tend to be solid colors such as blue, green, brown, or grey. However, on formal occasions they wear black. An apron is worn over the dress and they wear black shoes with stockings. When in public, Amish women wear a black bonnet and shawl. Traditionally, women and girls wear their hair uncut, and parted in the middle. It is then twisted into a bun at the back of the head. They never wear any jewelry or make-up. The Amish men and boys generally wear dark suits and the pants are held up with suspenders. They wear brown shoes for work, and black shoes for formal occasions. When outside, men tend to wear broad- brimmed hats made out of straw or black felt. For their hair, they tend to comb it in front with bangs. When boys reach adulthood, they grow beards, but not mustaches however. Mustaches are thought to be associated with the military and aggression. 3429000-131445000 Evolution 4114800177800000 The Amish people have had strict religious beliefs since the religion was first started in 1693 . This being said, there have not been very many changes to their culture and way of life. Most Amish communities believe that a lot of change in a short period of time will "ruin" their way of life. Therefore, they have only just begun to introduce technology into their daily lives . For instance, farmers now use electric powered tools, and they have electric or gas burning stoves in their homes instead of wood stoves. These little changes have greatly helped and improved the Amish way of life. However, the

GANGS Essays - Crime, Criminology, Urban Decay, Gangs, Free Essays
GANGS Essays - Crime, Criminology, Urban Decay, Gangs, Free Essays GANGS Gangs are a violent reality that people have to deal with in today's cities. What has made these groups come about? Why do kids feel that being in a gang is both an acceptable and prestigious way to live? The long range answer to these questions can only be speculated upon, but in the short term the answers are much easier to find. On the surface, gangs are a direct result of human beings' personal wants and peer pressure. To determine how to effectively end gang violence we must find the way that these morals are given to the individual. Unfortunately, these can only be hypothesized. However, by looking at the way humans are influenced in society, I believe there is good evidence to point the blame at several institutions. These include the forces of the media, the government, theatre, drugs and our economic system. On the surface, gangs are caused by peer pressure and greed. Many teens in gangs will pressure peers into becoming part of a gang by making it all sound glamorous. Money is also an crucial factor. A kid (a 6-10 year old, who is not yet a member) is shown that s/he could make $200 to $400 for small part time gang jobs. Although these are important factors they are not strong enough to make kids do things that are strongly against their morals. One of the ways that kids morals are bent so that gang violence becomes more acceptable is the influence of television and movies. The average child spends more time at a TV than she/he spends in a classroom. Since nobody can completely turn off their minds, kids must be learning something while watching the TV. Very few hours of television watched by children are educational, so other ideas are being absorbed during this period of time. Many shows on television today are extremely violent and are often shown this from a gang's perspective. A normal adult can see that this is showing how foully that gangs are living. However, to a child this portrays a violent gang existance as acceptable. 'The Ends Justifies the Means' mentality is also taught through many shows where the "goody guy" captures the "bad guy" through violence and is then being commended. A young child sees this a perfectly acceptable because he knows that the "bad guy" was wrong but has no idea of what acceptable apprehension techniques are. Gore in television also takes a big part in influencing young minds. Children see gory scenes and are fascinated by these things that they have not seen before. Older viewers see gore and are not concerned with the blood but rather with the pain the victim must feel. A younger mind doesn't make this connection. Thus a gore fascination is formed, and has been seen in several of my peers. Unfortunately kids raised with this sort of television end up growing up with a stronger propensity to becoming a violent gang member or 'violent- acceptant' person. "Gangs bring the delinquent norms of society into intimate contact with the individual."1, (Marshall B Clinard, 1963). So, as you can see if TV leads a child to believe that violence is the norm this will manifest itself in the actions of the child quite, often in a gang situation. This is especially the case when parents don't spend a lot of time with their kids at the TV explaining what is right and what is wrong. Quite often newer books and some types of music will enforce this type of thought and ideas. Once this mentality is installed in youngsters they become increasingly prone to being easily pushed into a gang situation by any problem at home or elsewhere. For instance, in poor families with many children or upper-middle class families where parents are always working, the children will often feel deprived of love. Parents can often feel that putting food on the table is enough love. Children of these families may often go to the gang firstly out of boredom and to belong somewhere. As time goes on, a form of love or kinship develops between the gang members and the child. It is then that the bond between the kid and the gang is

What is peak oil Is there any evidence that cities in the developing Essay
What is peak oil Is there any evidence that cities in the developing world are taking the issue seriously in their planning If there is little or no evidence, why is this the case - Essay Example st of the potentially oil rich regions have already been explored, and also due to legislation concerning the preservation of land with natural beauty or heritage value. The irreversible decline in oil production will cause adverse impacts in the global economy, ââ¬Å"recession, food shortages and wars and conflicts over the remaining oil suppliesâ⬠(Huddart and Stott 873). By the year 2030, it is predicted that while city dwellers in developed countries would have increased by 20%, the urban population in developing countries would have more than doubled to around 4 billion people, leading to overcrowding in several cities. In contemporary society there is a heavy dependence on oil for transportation, in industry, and in other requirements for liquid fossil fuels. ââ¬Å"China, India and other countries are rapidly increasing their consumption while production from known oil fields is peakingâ⬠(Wissler 80). Kenneth S. Deffeyes (23) raises a controversial perspective based on geology and mathematics; he considers it improbable that additional major oilfields now remain undiscovered, and predicts increasingly difficult economic, social and political conditions particularly for regions most dependent on oil, specifically imported oil. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other exporters of oil will be able to charge high rates to fulfill the demands for the commodity, resulting in steep oil price hikes followed by greater chaos than similar occurrences in 1973 and 1979. The problem of ââ¬Ëpeak oilââ¬â¢ is also related to the issue of global warming. When oil production peaks and starts declining, it will be necessary to use other substitutes besides renewable resources examined above, such as coal. This will be necessary to power electric and hybrid vehicles and as the material converted into diesel fuel. These processes producing carbon dioxide will increase air and water pollution, and adversely affect climate change. ââ¬Å"Therefore, a potential effect of climate change is increased

Music Therapy in obstertic patient - Essay Example ncluded in the review they must have investigated the effect of music, involved adult hospital patients and used a randomized controlled trial design. These studies must also have used outcome measures such as anxiety, satisfaction, pain, mood and vital signs. Identified studies were critically appraised, and then categorized according to whether music was evaluated during normal care delivery or during invasive and unpleasant procedures. When appropriate, studies were combined in a meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 29 studies were identified that fulfilled the inclusion criteria, of which 10 were subsequently excluded following critical appraisal. Music played via headphones reduces anxiety of patients during normal care deliver, but it has no impact on the anxiety of patients undergoing procedures such as bronchoscopy, sigmoidoscopy or surgery with a spinal anaesthetic. Macbeth :: essays research papers
During the Elizabethan Age, Shakespeare was the greatest author and drama writer. He wrote such masterpiece tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Othello. Perhaps the greatest of them all is the story of Macbeth. In the play, the first Thane of Cawdor, Duncan, Banquo, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth all are considered to have flaws which to a greater or lesser degree is the cause of their downfall. à à à à à In the second scene of the play you learn that Scotland is in war with Norway. King Duncan has learned that the First Thane of Cawdor was helping out the Norwegians. His assistance cost him his life. For treason, King Duncan ordered the first Thane of Cawdor to be executed and have Macbeth take his title. Though the first Thane of Cawdor was never actually in the play itself, the reader has to take the word of the Thane of Ross he was a traitor. ââ¬Å"Assisted by that most disloyal traitor The Thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict.â⬠(I ii 52-53) à à à à à After Macbeth is given the title of the first Thane of Cawdor, King Duncan decides to visit the successful captain and be a guest at his house. Duncan doesnââ¬â¢t know that it is supposed to be Macbethââ¬â¢s destiny to become king. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth decide to come up with this plan to kill Duncan in his sleep. Duncan was simply there congratulating Macbeth on his recent accomplishments. He had no idea of the trouble he was getting himself into during his stay at Macbethââ¬â¢s. The only real flaw you can give to Duncan is that he should have had someone watching over him like a bodyguard, or that he should have been more suspicious about his hosts. à à à à à The reason of Macbethââ¬â¢s slaughter of King Duncan was the idea that he was the rightful King. The three witches had told him he would be the first Thane of Cawdor before he was given the rank. They also said that he would eventually reign as king. Besides Lady Macbeth who knew about the three witches, the only other person to know about them was Banquo. He automatically was considered a threat to Macbeth. ââ¬Å"For Banquoââ¬â¢s issue have I filed my mind, for them the gracious Duncan I have murdered.â⬠(III I 65-66) Macbeth is ordering the execution of Banquo. Banquo could have saved himself because he saw that the danger lies ahead for him.

Why does Kirsner think that amateur producers of video on You Tube will give way to the professional big media players?
There are a number of reasons used by Kirsner to support his views that amateur producers will given way to professional big media players. Firstly, it is due to their lack in value-added content.Undoubtedly, viewers were curious and attracted to the humorous video clips initially but such a ââ¬Ëmarketââ¬â¢ has become too saturated and boring as more and more amateur producers try to follow suit.As such, viewers would switch back to familiar professional productions which are not a waste of time in watching. He felt that people nowadays are more selective as they have more choices and would want to choose the better ones. This is especially so when these big media players are entering the internet market to bring up the production quality to re-attract the viewers. Kirsner further cited examples where many of the previously popular amateur producers were still ranked high on the web only because they had merged forces with the professional big media players.Another reason is tha t Kirsner believe that amateur producers do not have the large revenue to spend on marketing, unlike the big media players. They could only rely on word of mouth or simply hope that their movie clip was ââ¬Ëdiscoveredââ¬â¢ by viewers. Thus, it would only be a matter of time before they become forgotten. Finally, Kirsner mentioned that even if the amateur producers were able to attract a large group of viewers, most of them were usually unable to come up with interesting content to sustain the viewersââ¬â¢ interest. Therefore, Kirsner believed that it would only be a matter of time before such amateur producers of video on You Tube give way to the professional big media players.2. Do you think most informed Americans would find Kirsnerââ¬â¢s predictions about the big media corporations dominating 80% of viewers compared to 20% for amateur videos is accurate? In my opinion, I do not think that most Americans would find Kirsnerââ¬â¢s predictions about the big media corporat ions dominating 80% of viewers compared to 20% for amateur videos is accurate. No doubt, there will be a shift in the viewersââ¬â¢ taste but the shift will not be so great as there would still be unforeseen circumstances when the professional producers were not at hand to film the interesting content such as an earthquake, a tsunami or a hurricane. Many of such video clips were taken by amateur producers and posted on the internet for viewers as they happened to be at the scene and were armed with a video camera.3.à à his prediction of 60/40?I believe that his 60/40 prediction is likely to be more accurate. As mentioned in his article, the latest professionally produced had nearly attracted 900, 000 viewers daily but that definitely would not account for the majority of the population. It is likely that the big media players had re-attracted the older viewers but not the younger generations. This is especially so when young people usually do not have the patience to watch long serial. They would rather watch the short humorous video clips by amateur producers. In fact, many of my peers today still discuss and share the amateur productions that they have watched. There are also many comments and discussions still posted on the internet about the video clips. It could be a sort of peer pressure for them to continue watching as they might feel out of place if they had not watched such clips.Kirsner had also mentioned in his article that there had already been evidence of amateur producers ââ¬Ëdeveloping continued seriesââ¬â¢ (Kirsner Scott, 2006), thus the number of viewers is unlikely to drop too low.BibliographyKirsner, Scott. 2006. As online viewing booms, the amateurs give way to big media. http://mecury news.com/mld/mercurynews/news/editorial/16154786.htm

World Trade Essay example - 1308 Words
Traditional and most developed form of international relationships is world trade. World trade is around 80 percent of all international economical relationships. International trade is a form of communications between manufactures of different countries that comes out as a result of world labor division, and express mutual economic dependence. Wild, in his book gives us a definition of world trade as: The purchase, sale, or exchange of goods and services across national borders induced by sellers, buyers and intermediary in different countries. International trade includes import and export of goods and services; ratio between them is called trade balance. According to international trade theory of David Ricardo, every country shouldâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another example for decrease of supply would be countries that produce wheat. In particular years, wheat harvest is not so good, due to weather conditions, which decreases world wheat output. International wheat trade between countries also decreases. Supply and demand factors are not the only world output factors that affect international trade. Another factor is money value factor. If a country is in recession due to political or economic reasons, its currency value gets weakened in world market. This makes imports for this country more expensive. Therefore, imports of the country decrease. This affects in trading balance, and world trade. The exact pattern of international trade is practically impossible to determine. One of the biggest reasons for that is underground trade in economies, or so called black market. The second reason for that is because governments of some countries choose to distort some goods products or materials that cross borders. Example would be armor and ammunition, other military equipment, vehicles and other goods. But some agencies that are available in most countries provide us with broad data that can give us a picture of broad patterns of world trade. Several models were used to determine patterns of international trade. One of them, model of David Ricardo, so called Ricardian model ahs been discussed already earlier. It emphasizes on comparative advantage of each country in producing aShow MoreRelatedThe World Trade Organization ( Wto )1345 Words à |à 6 PagesThe World Trade Organization (WTO) is the most powerful legislative and judicial body in the world.
